UEFA Issues Statement on Julián Álvarez Penalty Controversy After Atlético Complaints

Álvarez Penalty

UEFA has responded to Atlético Madrid’s enquiry regarding the disallowed penalty taken by Julián Álvarez during the UEFA Champions League clash against Real Madrid.

In an official statement, UEFA explained,

"Atlético enquired with UEFA over the incident, which led to the disallowance of the kick from the penalty mark taken by Julián Álvarez at the end of yesterday’s UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid."

The statement further clarified the decision,

"Although minimal, the player made contact with the ball using his standing foot before striking it, as shown in the video footage. Under the current Laws of the Game, VAR was required to intervene and advise the referee to disallow the goal."

UEFA also revealed that discussions will soon take place with FIFA and IFAB to assess whether the existing rule should be reviewed in cases where a double touch appears to be clearly unintentional.

More updates to follow as the debate around this decision continues.
