Nigeria's security investigates four northern politicians for using Russian flags in protests

Protest

Nigeria's security agencies are investigating four prominent northern politicians over the use of Russian flags by #EndBadGovernance protesters. The politicians, from Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano states, are suspected of encouraging the use of these flags to incite unrest and push for an unconstitutional regime change.

The investigation follows protests in which demonstrators waved Russian flags and called for President Tinubu's resignation. The Russian flag is seen as a symbol linked to recent coups in West Africa, raising concerns about potential foreign interference.

The Nigerian military has labeled the act of displaying foreign flags as treasonous, and the Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested individuals involved in making these flags. Security forces have also arrested suspected foreign sponsors and reduced the number of protesters carrying Russian flags.

President Tinubu has met with intelligence chiefs to address the situation. The Nigerian Immigration Service is monitoring suspected foreign sponsors, while the Inspector-General of Police has initiated trials for those arrested during the protests.

Political groups and local leaders have condemned the use of the Russian flag, with some disassociating themselves from the protests and calling for accountability. The protests have led to some property damage and unrest in various states.
